Great office culture – what it means to me

I recently joined Lotus People as a temporary recruitment consultant and my experience has been nothing short of amazing. Although it has only been 2 months it has been jam packed so far, including fun things like an office move (to the most incredible newly renovated offices) an awards nightChristmas in July and an end of year conference to Port Douglas – I’m still pinching myself over that one!

These past couple of months at Lotus People has really highlighted how important great office culture is to one’s productivity and mental health within an organisation.

I cannot stress enough how important teamwork is – you’d think that one goes without saying, but it’s not always the case. Having a well-oiled, supportive and collaborative team makes everything so much easier. Being out at meetings or unable to make it into the office unexpectedly can really impact your day to day, but knowing that I can rely on my wonderful team to keep things ticking over for me and that my candidates and clients are in safe hands is indescribable.

Work life balance is another big factor in great office culture. There are never enough hours in the day when it comes to recruitment – there’s always more to do! Working flexible hours and having the ability to come into work early and then leave at a reasonable hour, or even leave early, without guilt is a huge plus here at Lotus People.

Another perk we have here at Lotus HQ is a free weekly yoga class on a Wednesday. The benefits of yoga have been proven, and this is time out that the team and I enjoy so much.

Lastly, I think that the heart of a good culture is working with a team who have an upbeat or ‘can do’ approach. Nothing catches faster than a bad attitude or a negative approach and there isn’t room for either in the recruitment industry, especially not at Lotus. We are supportive of each other and treat our candidates, clients and each other with the utmost respect. The support of your team is really invaluable – if I’m having a bad day, being able to turn to a colleague with a positive outlook will always set me back on the right track again.

These are just a few of my favourite things about working at Lotus People and it’s only been two months! If you are looking for work or temporary staff, please reach out to me on michelle@lotuspeople.com.au

As of 2024, a powerful generational shift is redefining the Australian workforce. For the first time, the workplace is no longer dominated by Baby Boomers or Gen X, but by Millennials and Gen Z. According to the Great Place to Work Insights Report 2024 , these two generations now account for 67% of the workforce in Australia — a demographic transformation that is reshaping major culture across workplaces. With this shift means evolving expectations: how people want to work, what they value in employers, and what they need from leaders. As Baby Boomers retire and Gen X move into more senior leadership roles, Millennials and Gen Z are stepping up — and demanding workplaces that are human-first, values-led and future-focused.

In a market where competition for qualified professionals is fierce, many of our non-profit clients are asking us: “How can we attract and retain great people when we can’t compete on salary and perks?” It’s a valid concern. Industries such as technology, financial services and consulting often have the financial bandwidth to offer high salaries, generous bonus structures and a long list of lifestyle benefits. For mission-driven organisations working with tighter resources, it can feel like a difficult race to run. But a compelling Employee Value Proposition (EVP) isn’t built on budget alone. An EVP is fundamentally about meaning. The reasons people feel proud to work at your organisation. The most effective EVPs we see are not necessarily flashy, but they are clear, consistent and deeply connected to the values and culture of the organisation. When well-crafted and confidently communicated, non-profits can not only compete, but excel, when it comes to attracting and retaining capable, aligned professionals who are motivated by more than just salary.
